Yoga for Indian civil servants: worth it?

  • The #Modi government of India has announced that over three million civil servants will be trained in yoga.
  • Already, yoga is taught to trainees of para-military and police forces as part of curriculum.
  • There is also a move to spread yoga to schools and universities in India.
  • There is a full-fledged ministry in the area of alternative medicine that includes yoga and naturopathy, along with Unani, Homeopathy and Sidha.
  • To top it all, June 21 has been declared recently as the International Yoga Day, and the Indian government is going all out to make it a huge event.

Yoga, yoga all the way!

As always, I am not too impressed. Call me an eternal pessimist (which I am not) but believe me, yoga is not meant to be too much pomp and show. It should remain a silent, personal, way of life. However, if these all efforts make asanas and pranayamas - the basic yoga procedures - popular and lead to better health of people, this show is worth it and I am all for it, though grudgingly.
